REVIEW: Hot Toys 1:6 Thor: The Dark World - LOKI

The Norse God of Mischief Returns...

Review and Photos by Jorge Pelaez

Not many villains make the cut when it comes to Hot Toys' sixth scale figures. One of the lucky candidates to receive the collectible figural treatment is none other than the god of mischief Loki. This iconic villain made his figural debut as part of the wildly popular Avengers movie collection, however this particular villain has become so popular among fans that he has become the first Marvel villain to receive a second collectible movie figure within Hot Toys’ movie masterpiece collection. Based on the second installment in the Thor movie saga, this new version of Loki is based on his look in the Thor: The Dark World.

The packaging on this new version of Loki is quite a departure from most other Hot Toys figure releases to date. The box is made in the shape of Thor’s mystical hammer Mjolnir encased in a golden foil. The front of the box features a circular Asgardian symbol with Loki’s name in the center. The circular symbol is surrounded by Asgardian runes just like the ones inscribed on Thor’s hammer. The package features a white insert with an illustration of Loki sitting on Odin’s throne from the final scene of the film.

This new version of Loki features a simplified version of the same outfit he wears in the Avengers but with less armor and no helmet. The figure features a brand new head portrait with an amazing likeness of Tom Hidleston’s portrayal of Loki in the Thor sequel. The new head portrait features a different wet look to his hair along with a seriously deceiving facial expression. The newly designed head sculpt on this figure is overall much better than the previous Loki as it captures Tom Hiddleston’s likeness and facial features much better.

In comparison to the Avengers Loki, this updated version features a lot less accessories considering the enormous box it comes housed within. It would have been great if Hot Toys would have taken advantage of this and included an additional wardrobe for Loki from the scene where he was imprisoned on Asgard. However, the figure does include full-body unified shackles which is really awesome packed-in item which enhances the value of this figure. The shackles are beautifully sculpted and feature intricate movie-accurate details and real metal chains that hold each restraint together. The shackles and neck restraints can be easily placed on the figure by removing the head, hands and ankles and sliding the corresponding restraints around the body parts.

Other than that, the figure simply comes with a display stand with name, dagger, closed-grip right hand for holding Loki’s dagger, a gripping left hand and an additional pair of relaxed hands. There is also an exclusive edition of this figure which includes a bonus encased aether within a containment capsule.

While this new updated version of Loki may leave some collectors craving more out of this release, it is still a fantastically well-made figure and features an awesome package design. The inclusion of the unified shackles and the enhanced head portrait also make this item worth the purchase making this a very worth-while acquisition for Marvel and Thor fans alike.
