Sci-Fi Game With New Zealand-Inspired Robot Designs...
When we were checking out the massive WETA booth at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, something unique yet familiar caught our eye. It was a human-sized orange robot of some sort that we had never seen before and yet was immediately recognizable as belonging to the same world as Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, Elysium, and Chappie. And that should come as no surprise since the same guys at WETA Workshop who were behind the designs for those films created this new property: GKR (Giant Killer Robots)!
GKR tells the story of a near-future world in which mega-corporations vie for salvage rights in ruined cities via televised and sponsored robotic combat. As you can see in the photos the mechanical designs are really cool with interesting articulation and propulsion systems, great weight, and of course awesome weapons ranging from missiles to cannons and even directed energy. GKR is planned for a miniatures board game utilizing cutting edge mobile device and AR technology to let you see the action through your screen; for instance, watch as your giant robot activates a spherical energy shield to block incoming fire. We’ll have more info on the game as we get it, but look for news and possibly a Kickstarter later this year.
