If there's one thing HBO's hit fantasy series Game of Thrones has taught fans, it's to expect the unexpected. The show, which recently wrapped its third season, constantly surprises viewers with deceptive plot turns and an unpredictable (often short-lived) cast of characters. Dark Horse has been similarly surprising collectors with its broad range of merchandise from the show.
Jon Snow & Ghost Statue, Hitting Stores Today, August 7th
From giftware branded with sigils of the various houses, to high-end fine art sculptures (such as the just released Jon Snow & Ghost Statue), Dark Horse has been sating the hunger of Game of Thrones fans. Recently we had the pleasure of speaking with Dark Horse's VP of Product Development David Scroggy about the company’s latest Game of Thrones product surprise: an ongoing series of high-quality, affordable molded plastic figures of the most beloved characters.
Game of Thrones Jon Snow Figure
Slated to debut in January 2014, this 7.5-inch non-articulated figure line will launch with series favorites Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen. Each figure will feature window box packaging and retail for $24.99.
“We have been quietly developing these for some time,” Scroggy remarked, “and we decided to make these non-articulated, in order to capture all of the small details that would be at risk in a traditional jointed action figure. That is why we are not using the term ‘action figure,’ although that is what many might call them.”
The pair were sculpted by industry veteran Steve Kiwus and painted by Kat Sapene. Each Game of Thrones figure is approved not only by HBO, but by the individual show talent, Scroggy explained.
Game of Thrones Daeneys Figure
Jon and Daenerys will whet the appetite of collectors well before Game of Thrones' March 2014 premiere. Then in May, with the series in full swing, Dark Horse will release a second wave. Also sculpted by Kiwus, this three-figure assortment will consist of Tyrion Lannister, Khal Drogo and Ned Stark. While these figures are pending approval and cannot be shown now, David did give us a taste of what collectors can look forward to. For Tyrion, Dark Horse will have "The Imp" posed doing what he does best: plotting and scheming with a map in hand. The late, great Ned Stark will be sculpted in a stoic, contemplative stance with his hands resting on his massive broad sword just in front of him (similar to press images on the net, like this one.) The brutal Drogo will be battle ready with curved scimitar held high in one hand, and a knife lowered in the other. David pointed out that all figures in this series will be in scale with each other, Khal Drogo looming over the rest in the line at a towering 8.5 inches tall. In comparison, Tyrion will measure in at 6 inches and Ned Stark will stand 8 inches. Drogo's size difference will also be reflected in his window box packaging. Whereas the standard pack dimensions will be 8" L x 4.5" W x 9" H, Drogo's customized box comes in at 8.5" L x 4.5" W x a whopping 10.5" High. You won't miss him on store shelves. Drogo will retail as the same price as the rest, $24.99.
Things start to heat up this summer when Dark Horse releases five new character figures. Kiwus will continue to do the sculpting, but will be aided by the artisans of Gentle Giant at this stage of the series. It's still way too early to be dropping names, but looking over the list of five characters I was told were planned - fans are in for a treat. Asked if collectors would be seeing any variants or exclusives, such as Tyrion in armor, David informed us that they have so many great characters to tackle that variants and exclusives are not in the plan.
Game of Thrones Map Marker Set On Display at San Diego Comic-Con
Dark Horse's long-awaited Game of Thrones figures aren't the only surprise the company has in store for fans. In addition to giftware, detailed figures and high-end statues, Dark Horse will be producing select prop replicas, starting with a Map Marker Set. It will include a cloth map and finely crafted pieces that resemble six of the honored house sigils. David stressed that the packaging for the Map Marker Set is being designed with the same aesthetic as the prop replica inside. As with Season 3's "Red Wedding" finale, you’re in for a shock.
