Brick Unboxing With Video And Some New Dials...
Last week we brought HeroClix players and collectors your first look at the upcoming DC HeroClix Justice League Trinity War Gravity Feed and Crime Syndicate Fast Forces pack from WizKids (see HERE), and we’re continuing our Trinity War coverage with an unboxing of a booster brick! To recap, this set is named for and celebrates the 2013 DC Comics event that saw the members of no fewer than three Justice Leagues come into conflict. Justice League Trinity War in turn brings HeroClix players a fantastic new assortment of figures from the Justice League, Justice League of America, and Justice League Dark... but that’s just the beginning. There are also new 3D objects capturing the Seven Deadly Sins, functional and fun generics, and even the New 52 Crime Syndicate as revealed at the end of Trinity War and into the Forever Evil event! So are you ready to check out an example of what you might find in a brick of Trinity War? Scroll down for some video unboxing as well as a complete photo gallery of the figures we pulled. Let’s jump right in by taking a look at the booster packaging:
So as you can see in that short intro video the Trinity War boosters feature a diptych Justice League artwork on the front covers. The side panels show off figures from the set, notably among the three Justice League teams (Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman, Green Lantern/Green Arrow/Stargirl/Martian Manhunter/Hawkman, Frankenstein/John Constantine/Zatanna/Tim Hunter) and prominent characters from Forever Evil (Lex Luthor, Sinestro, Bizarro, Black Adam, and Mazahs!). Finally, the back panel advertises the inclusion of the Seven Deadly Sins 3D special objects in the set which interact with the case incentive Pandora’s Box and Rock of Eternity resources!
All in all I was really impressed with the collation, getting at least one of each common, fourteen out of sixteen uncommons, six rares, three super rares, a chase, and two 3D special objects. Even better, my super rares were one figure each from the three Justice Leagues: Batman from the main team, Manhunter from America, and Zatanna from Dark! I thought that was pretty cool. (Again, it needs to be said that all of this may not be indicative of the average brick and you have no guarantees as to what you’ll pull.) The figures themselves look pretty great overall with strong sculpts, lots of detail, and impressive paint jobs. Several figures have really well done faces in particular with the best eyes I’ve seen in HeroClix, and among those were commons like the Blackgate Guard and Inmate.
How about some new dials? Let’s start with a character long awaited by some very hardcore fans, Vibe! The Detroit hero makes his HeroClix debut as a solid secondary attacker, deployment assist, and board control piece. He’s 80 points with a 5 range and a trait giving him permanent use of Quake. Vibe’s standard six click dial has plenty of movement with two clicks of Running Shot and four of Sidestep so he can get close for Quake or stay at arm’s length and use his range. Similarly he has two clicks (including top dial) of the always handy Telekinesis while the remaining slots have Pulse Wave which pairs nicely with his short range. Defensively he’s soft with top and end-dial Willpower bracketing a run of Energy Shield/Deflection, but it’s worth getting him close to the enemy to use his amazing front-loaded special power that requires enemies in range to burn double power actions to use Charge, Hypersonic Speed, Phasing/Teleport, and Running Shot! The common Vibe has the A.R.G.U.S. and Justice League of America keywords.
Another cool common in Trinity War is the New 52 incarnation of Bizarro. Lex Luthor’s experimental clone of Superman is 215 points with the Superman Enemy team ability, Flight, Indomitable, a 6 range, and a trait giving him Super Strength and adjacent friendly Lex Luthors Mastermind that’s usable only on the creature and which ignores point values. As a Mastermind sponge Bizarro has a nice, long dial with great defensive powers along with plenty of ways to deal damage too. Overlapping close and ranged combat powers give him flexibility, and remember his permanent Super Strength. On his dial you’ll find Running Shot, Charge, Flurry, Energy Explosion, Quake, Battle Fury, and Close Combat Expert. Defensively he transitions through Invincible, Impervious, Invulnerability, and Toughness with a final click of Regeneration. “B-Zero” has a 100 point starting line on click #5 and the keywords Brute, Injustice League, Legion of Doom, and Monster.
Moving on to the uncommons we’ve got the Justice Leaguer Cyborg! Indomitable and a 5 range with two targets start the benefits the 146 point hero brings to the table, and somewhat surprisingly he has no team ability or trait. Vic has tons of offensive might with changing roles, starting with two special powers giving him Running Shot and Improved Movement ignoring Elevated and Hindering, plus Penetrating/Psychic Blast that also applies tokens to the un-tokened. Mid-dial Cyborg remembers his football career with Charge and Super Strength, while end-dial he has Leap/Climb to get into position to unleash Pulse Wave. A full dial of damage reducers protects the Leaguer with Toughness and a little bit of Invulnerability, and his damage track is a revolving door of Outwit, Ranged Combat Expert, and Perplex. Cyborg has the Justice League and Robot keywords and an 85 point starting line on click #4.
In the video above I noted that the rare Shaggy Man was a giant, but amazingly in HeroClix he isn’t actually a “Giant.” A lot of people will prefer that since it gives him a measure of protection from getting shot, but he is pretty huge. Anyway, the Ivo-created monstrosity is a 153 point close combat wrecking ball who’s incredibly hard to put down. That starts with his trait letting you heal him of 1 damage at the beginning of each of your turns! For five clicks Shaggy Man is a mobile destroyer with Charge then Sidestep, Super Strength, Invulnerability and Toughness, and Battle Fury with high damage. On click #6 most of the powers drop away but the plastalloy creature gains a special power that gives him Regeneration that’s not reduced by -2! And if somehow you don’t manage to heal him, on the last click (#9!) of his long dial Shaggy Man has Super Senses to avoid being KO’d until he can heal back to Regen. The monster has the Robot and Secret Society of Super Villains keywords.
Generally the best thing you can hope to pull in a brick of HeroClix is a chase, and we were lucky to get ourselves in the form of Gluttony! One of the Seven Deadly Sins who make up the chases in Trinity War, Gluttony and the rest are embodiments of emotions and desires that plague humanity and are (sometimes) imprisoned at the Rock of Eternity. We’re still learning about these chases, but they seem really cool with interesting abilities. This one is 107 points with both Mystics and Quintessence team abilities and a trait letting you use the S107 Gluttony relic on your team without it costing against your objects! Gluttony has only five clicks of life but makes up for that with a trio of mind-boggling special powers. The creature has tragically low speed but is helped out some with four clicks of Sidestep. Starting Poison gives way immediately to the first special power giving it Steal Energy and preventing enemies within 5 squares from healing. A low defense features another special power preventing Gluttony from being carried, but also letting it ignore all but 1 damage when dealt it (and this can’t be countered or ignored); there’s also Regeneration on the last click. Gluttony’s mid-dial has the third special power granting it Exploit Weakness, removing relics and “resource attachments” from hit enemies, and making it so that hit enemies also can’t be assigned those things all game! The creature has the Mystical and Seven Deadly Sins keywords.
Finally, let’s take a look at one of the Seven Deadly Sins 3D special objects with Wrath. A tiny translucent plastic piece, this is an 8 point Relic picked up on a roll of 5-6. Once that happens the character is empowered with Combat Reflexes, Sidestep, and Willpower while adjacent opponents are prevented from using Shape Change!
You can get your hands on the Justice League Trinity War booster set on February 18th alongside the Crime Syndicate Fast Forces pack. As you can see here there are tons of great-looking figures in this set and a nice assortment of characters from the various Justice Leagues and their enemies including the Crime Syndicate and more. There’s also a good mix of brand new characters to HeroClix and remakes, lots of them long-awaited or representing new versions of characters Clixed in the past. In addition to the main set and Fast Forces there’s a Gravity Feed Primer out this week and an upcoming Organized Play kit offering the Roy Harper (Arsenal) prize figure and new maps so make sure to check with your local comic book store to find out if they’ll have it. And if you missed our look at the Crime Syndicate Fast Forces pack and Trinity War Gravity Feed, you can see that HERE.
