Marvel madness continues to run rampant at Kotobukiya and this time around, sculptor Erick Sosa has created a hyper detailed rendition of none other but the "Merc with a Mouth" - Deadpool. This amazing statue was released recently alongside the Danger Room Series Wolverine (read our review HERE) and Psylocke statues to kick of 2011 in KOTO style.
PACKAGING: Kotobukiya has kept very faithful to their tradition of simple and elegant packaging with no over-the-top details. The box is completely white with some embossed lettering and golden lettering. The back of the box features a pair of images of the statue along with a mini preview of the Wolverine Danger Room Sessions statue. The best part of the packaging is the detailed character bio and the Artist’s commentary about his creations. It is awesome that Kotobukiya allowed Erick Sosa to talk about his vision and what inspired him to sculpt his interpretation of Deadpool.
SCULPT: This is the most dynamic statue of Deadpool ever done as the piece captures the character in mid-leap over a wooden crate and at the ready to dispose anyone who gets in his way. The statue sits upon a hyper-detailed base which resembles the interior of an industrial warehouse, The wooden crate is richly detailed to mimic the look of real wood and there are bullet shells laying on its surface depicting the recent use of firepower by Deadpool. The floor of the base has a rich concrete texture that is incredibly life-like with random bullet casings scattered among its surface.
The Deadpool statue includes several additional accessories that can be used to customize the way you display the statue. The best part about this statue is the inclusion of interchangeable arms and hands which allow the statue to be displayed in one four different ways. As an added bonus, this statue also includes an adorable custom Deadpool plush doll sculpted in resin and featuring amazing details. The facial sculpt feature an immense level of detail as the wrinkles on Deadpool’s facemask illustrate his facial expression quite vividly.
The details on the costume are vividly illustrated with precision and detail in a way that truly brings this piece to life. The statue features the following parts/accessories:
- magnetic right forearm with Uzi
- magnetic right arm with sword
- magnetic left hand holding Uzi
- magnetic left hand holding sword
- bazooka resin accessory
- machine gun resin accessory
- pistol resin accessory
- Deadpool custom plush figure resin accessory
PAINT: The color applications on this statue are very clean with very minor misapplications. The display base is colored in an incredibly realistic way and features dry-bushing and weathering techniques that enhance the overall look of the piece. Deadpool himself is colored very well with a vivid blend of red-colored hues which contrast very nicely against the stark black highlights in his costume. The accessories are also colored elegantly and feature slight scuff and weathering details throughout.
OVERALL: This is my fourth Kotobukiya Marvel statue so far and I have to tell you that this line shows no indication of slowing down and is the high quality and attention to detail has remained consistent throughout the various releases. For Deadpool fans, this is an absolute must-have piece and a fanboy's dream come true. With its interchangeable parts, bonus display accessories and dynamically impressive design, the Kotobukiya's Deadpool Fine Art statue makes a great addition to anyone’s Marvel collection. This statue is available now through Kotobukiya’s website and many of our fine sponsors for around $160. Keep it locked on figures.com for additional First Looks and reviews of upcoming Marvel statues in the near future.
