Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was originally released in 2007. Directed by Tim Burton, the film starred the amazing Johnny Depp as the film’s namesake, a wronged man who teams up with a down-on-her-luck baker named Ms. Lovett to exact his revenge on society. The movie was based on the wildly successful stage musical by Stephen Sondheim, which was in turn, based on historical events surrounding a barber named Sweeney Todd. While Medicom was the first to make a 1/6 scale figure based on a the infamous character back in 2009, Hot Toys now takes a stab at the license by releasing their own 1/6 scale figure as part of their Movie Masterpiece series.

While not a detailed or elaborate as a lot of their other released, the Sweeney Todd packaging is by no means any less striking. An overall black printed box is interrupted by a striking sliver of red wrapping around the left side, meant to symbolize a strike from his deadly straight razor. The black is contrasted by an all red interior, accessible through a front-opening flap. The figure is viewable through a large window highlighted by a sweeping razor with an odd swoosh that is either supposed to be the movement of the razor or a bloody towel. The figure in protected on the inside by two stacking trays with the figure on one and his base and chair on the other and accessories dispersed between the two.

I don’t know how the team at Hot Toys does it, but it seems at this point that they have studied Johnny Depp’s likeness so much that it’s almost no trouble to continually whip out the most amazing head sculpts of the actor that have ever been done. They have improved upon the multiple Jack Sparrow sculpts that they have produced with an almost spot-on likeness of the actor. Featuring a hard, emotionless expression, the face is framed an equally impressive, multi-layered hairpiece that perfectly captures Todd’s tossled hairdo.

Everything is painted extremely well with shading in the right places and small details such as his eyes done perfectly with no imperfections whatsoever. It’s a shame we didn’t get a Johnny Depp likeness on their Edward Scissorhands, but I’m sure I’ll be impressed yet again by the upcoming Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow!

The figure is built upon a standard slim version TrueType body and features around 38 points of articulation, allowing you to pose your Sweeney Todd in most of the poses seen in the film. The figure’s costume is pretty spot-on as well, with a number of layers and pieces to really bring the feel of the film to life. He includes his outer trench coat, a grey jacket, dark green vest, white shirt, dark blue pants, faux-leather belt, and boots. The clothing fits him very well and is tailored cleanly with no loose threads or imperfections that I could see. His costume is supplemented by some additional small details such as his neck scarf, shaving towel, and faux-leather sharpening strip.

As far as accessories go, Sweeney Todd is geared and ready for some throat slashing. He features six different hands to swap out including sets with leather gloves and knit gloves and a set for holding his shaving kit, which features a shaving brush and mug. He also includes three articulated razors and his wooden storage box with a hinged lid.

Perhaps his most impressive accessories are the set pieces he includes. First off is a fully-sculpted 1/6 scale model of his barber chair/deathtrap with all of the gears, pedals, and intricate patterns right from the movie, perfect for giving all of your figures “the closest shave they will ever know”. The chair can sit upon a wood-printed diamond-shaped base that fits in with a movie-accurate cardboard backdrop depicting Sweeney’s shop from the film. The figure also includes the standard Hot Toys black figure base with nameplate for those that want a simpler display.

Sweeney Todd is a figure fans of the film and musical will definitely want to own. While slightly more costly than it’s predecessor, Hot Toys’ version of Todd when compared to Medicom is like Sideshow Star Wars compared to Hasbro. The amount of detail, impressive likeness, and amazing accessories make this a must-have figure for any Depp fan’s collection. The Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street MMS figure is available now from Hot Toys!
